About Us

The Howard County Human Resources Society was formed in April 2001 by a small group of human resource professionals who recognized that the growing business community of the county needed a professional association for its HR staff members to come together, gain information, network among themselves to assist each other in addressing common problems, and grow in their chosen field.

As an affilliate of the national Society for Human Resource Management, HoCoHRS represents the highest levels of professionalism and service to its member HR professionals and to the larger Howard County business community.  We are proud to be an active, contributing member of the HR field, providing value and benefit to our members and the companies they work for.  We are committed to our motto:  Advancing the Profession -- Serving the Professional.

Our membership boasts representation from both profit and not-for-profit organizations, large and small companies, consultants, service providers, and academia.  Members practice in every HR specialization, and a large number are solo practitioners.  A large percentage hold a PHR or SPHR certification from the Human Resource Certification Institute, and several hold other--and in some cases, additional--certifications from related professions as well.

HoCoHRS has forged an alliance with Howard Community College for professional development seminars, workshops, and in providing meeting space.  To better join hands with other HR associations, HoCoHRS has teamed for various initiatives with the National SHRM, Maryland State SHRM, Chesapeake Human Resource Association, and other SHRM affiliates in Maryland to make a difference for our profession.

We meet on the 3rd Thursday of each month at Howard Community College's Ecker Business Training Center on Gateway Drive in Columbia.  We welcome HR practitioners, consultants, students, educators, and service providers living or working in Howard County and the surrounding area.  Each meeting features a networking breakfast, a short business meeting, and an informational/educational program presented by a successful HR leader in the area. Visit our calendar section to learn more about our events.  Join us in 2016!
