A Message from Our President
If quantitative data uses numbers to tell a story, qualitative data uses words to tell a story.
For example, data driven analysis of employee retention reveals a spike in turnover but only after conducting a round of interviews will you understand the reasons why and be able to respond accordingly. Brainstorming, surveys and interviews help gather reliable qualitative data to formulate a strategy to address the turnover problem.
Without question, organizations have access to more data now than at any other time in history. However, it is intimidating. What we collect, how we collect it and what we do with it once we collect it are all very important questions to answer before the collecting begins. Marc Goldberg, this month’s chapter meeting speaker and SHRM data guru, will help us sort this all out.
A few updates from our amazing committees:
Our Diversity Committee has been hard at work building a list of affinity groups to expand our current DIY resources (thank you Latoya). If you have groups that you want to ensure are included, please reach out to Latoya Hicks or our chapter email, [email protected] Additionally, the committee would like to collect demographics of our chapter members to learn more about our levels of diversity from a 30,000 foot view. More on that to come.
Our Membership Committee evaluated the data for our membership gains and losses, as well as meeting attendance, and realized that we needed to take a second look at our virtual meeting structure. Given that 2021 is still presenting us with an opportunity to remain virtual, our board has decided to make our monthly meetings free for chapter members until further notice.
Please take this opportunity to renew your membership or become a member. We still provide monthly educational seminars focusing on a range of relevant topics, and they all include SHRM and HRCI recertification credits as well as virtual networking.
The College Relations Committee has been hard at work advertising the continuation of our Tina L. Pavlish Scholarship. If you know of a local undergraduate student studying HR or business, applications are being accepted through the end of March. Marc will provide an overview of how HR professionals can capture and maintain "a seat at the table" by tying their activities to business strategy. This means creating a division/department/personal strategy that 1) is aligned with the organization, and 2) has measurable impact.
About Our Speaker:
As Chief Technology Officer, Marc is responsible for all technology supporting SHRM's commitment to its members and fulfillment of its mission worldwide. Marc is a technology executive and business partner with more than 20 years of experience in technology organizations. Prior to joining SHRM, Marc has led technology organizations at Namely, Inc., comiXology (acquired by Amazon), Epix, Next New Networks (acquired by YouTube/Google), TV Guide, and most recently at Beyond Finance, Inc. Earlier in his career, Marc spent more than 10 years at America Online, straddling its acquisition of Time Warner.
Additionally, he has run a successful consulting practice providing advice and mentoring to CEOs and CTOs at startups and established businesses performing organizational development; developing hiring plans; formulating board communication processes; and coaching for both leadership and management. Marc has facilitated organization and process changes to improve quality management, managed agile methodology transitions, provided agile coaching, executed technology organizational designs, and improved technical recruitment processes.
Marc also serves on the Board of Advisors for FUNDopolis, a startup aiming to empower individuals and communities to invest in and support the small businesses they love. Community business owners will use FUNDopolis to help fund their growth and manage the full funding lifecycle, all while cultivating deeper relationships with their customers. Marc holds a Bachelor of Science in Information Technology from American Intercontinental and studied at The George Washington University.

SHRM Will Influence Global Policy for Women
in the Workforce in 2021
SHRM has been named a member of the B20 Special Initiative on Women's Empowerment and will be represented by Emily M. Dickens, chief of staff, head of government affairs and corporate secretary. The Special Initiative will collect input from all B20 Task Forces and Action Councils to foster the empowerment of women, and to encourage gender diversity in all economic and social sectors. The Special Initiative will elevate targeted recommendations and advocate them to the G20 Leaders and other public and private organizations, institutions, and groups of interest.

A Historical Review of Women’s Achievements in the Workforce
There are heightened expectations and pressures on companies to be more transparent and proactive about their diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) in the workforce. These pressures come from various sources, including federal, state, and local governance, shareholder inquiries, and social justice movements. There are even interested parties, such as JUST Capital and the NYC Comptroller, that have asked companies to commit to sharing their company profile (i.e., EEO-1 report) with the public. Furthermore, there is now a Glassdoor DEI initiative that launched in 2020 that allows employees and applicants to provide diversity and inclusion ratings on companies.
Given the increased awareness on DEI, what better way to celebrate Women’s History month than to recognize achievements of women in the workforce? To accomplish this review, data was used from the US Census Bureau website. Data was pulled from the EEO 2000 Tabulation, EEO 2006-2010 Tabulation, and EEO 2014-2018 Tabulation. The progression of women in top executive jobs increased over the identified time periods. Female representation increased almost 9% in top executive jobs. Specifically, it was 18.82% in 2000, 22.19% in 2006-2010, and 27.45% in 2014-2018. It is evident that women have made progress in breaking through glass-ceilings in the workforce. However, as previously mentioned, stakeholders continue to hold companies accountable to committing to and making progress towards a more diverse and equitable workforce.
Additionally, these are pre-pandemic representation figures which do not capture the impact this pandemic may have had on females in the workforce (e.g., loss of job, voluntary turnover). It is important to monitor impacts and put effort into retaining, or bringing back, this talent at all levels of the workforce. This will help to maintain the achievements made thus far. Finally, these statistics may not show parity at the top levels of the workplace, but they do allow for useful benchmarking. Companies can conduct comparisons between the benchmark and actual representation to identify where there is underrepresentation for females. This identification of female underrepresentation is just one means in establishing goals and opportunities to further increase DEI awareness and initiatives. The Baltimore Hunger Project: HoCo HRS’ Non-Profit of the Quarter
We are so thankful for the work that The Baltimore Hunger Project has been doing for children in Baltimore area schools since 2014.
With the current pandemic ongoing, The Baltimore Hunger Project has increased distribution to include drive-up access at Baltimore County School locations.
