A Message from Our President

Dear Chapter Members and Friends:

I hope you are doing well. We miss seeing our chapter members and guests in person and are thinking of you.  The last two months has been busy for HoCoHRS as we moved quickly to disseminate pertinent information to our members and host virtual meetings starting in March.

Our March and April topics, COVID-19: How to Manage and Lead during this Global Pandemic; and From Overwhelmed to Empowered: Building Resilience In the Midst of COVID-19 were very well received.  As we prepare for this week’s annual Legislative Update featuring employment law attorney, Cheryl Brown, we are very excited for now and the future to reposition ourselves virtually and continue to bring you All Things HR.

This global pandemic was unimaginable and has posed significant challenges to everyone. Many of the businesses you support as HR professionals have had to make devasting decisions in order to survive.  Many others have stepped up in the most admirable ways to help those in need.

As we bear witness to this unprecedented time and begin to recover as a community, HoCoHRS sees it as an opportunity to take action and continue to follow through on our chapter’s mission: Advance the Profession, Serve the Professional.  This is also an opportunity to shift, refocus and provide you with the education, thought leadership, community, advocacy and support you want and need from your local, leading HR professional society.

Join us for our virtual monthly programs and events.  We are continuing to provide time for networking, as well as SHRM and HRCI Professional Development Credits (PDCs) for our monthly educational programs.  Review our newly revamped website for resources including HR trends and news, COVID-19 updates, scholarship and professional development information, job opportunities and more.  Check out our program schedule for the remaining of 2020 - we have great speakers lined up who are excited to interact with our chapter! Continue to stay connected by following us on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and Twitter.

We look forward to seeing you virtually, and serving you during this time.

Stay healthy,

Elicia Wood, Chapter President

Congratulations to Nancy Abrams: 2019 Tina L. Pavlish Scholarship winner!

Nancy’s passion for education and education is a beautiful way to honor Tina’s memory.  Below is an excerpt from Nancy’s 2019 application.

“I became interested in the HR field after working in management positions and I found myself enjoying the time spent training my employees. I wanted to continue in the business world, but my goal was to help businesses realize the full potential of their greatest assets- their employees. As an HR professional, I know the importance of studying in the field to keep up with the changes that are happening all the time. My goal is to eventually head a Training and Development department for a large organization [and] it is only obtainable if I further my education.”

Diversity and Inclusion

How Diversity Heads Are Steering Their Companies Through The COVID-19 Crisis

Ruth Umoh, Forbes Staff

The coronavirus pandemic has roiled the nation, leaving businesses with little choice but to adapt and adjust. As company leaders have pivoted to address the needs of their most important business asset—talent—one thing has become abundantly clear: those with strong diversity and inclusion initiatives already in place have had an easier time steering their companies through the pandemic’s choppy waters.

But even for companies with a solid diversity and inclusion foundation, the novel virus has forced diversity heads to think creatively about how best to support their talent, while still making strides on representation and belonging in the midst of global hiring freezes and layoffs.

While prioritizing the safety and well-being of their employees has, understandably, been placed at the top of their to-do list, continuing efforts to maintain inclusive work environments hasn't exactly dropped off.
