“We are in this together”: 2020 has been an unprecedented year, and we have heard and used this statement frequently to unite our communities during a time where we have experienced the COVID-19 pandemic, social unrest and economic uncertainty.
Thankfully, as individuals and collectively, we help, support and lift others up, especially when they are in need or feeling discouraged, weary, down or sad. As we move into the autumn season, this is a great time to reflect and help others. Autumn represents change, balance, and preservation of life and basic necessities, as day and night are the same length during the autumnal equinox.
Things we can do as the season changes:
- Focus on health and fitness, mentally and physically. As summer morphs into autumn, we exercise self-protection by wearing layers and thicker fabrics. We should also focus or refocus on our health by boosting our immunity through good habits and nutrition.
- Be the change you wish to see. Let your light shine. Others are inspired and motivated by you. Influence and focus on positive change for self and others.
- Help others. When we support the needs of others, personally or professionally, it is very fulfilling and provides an opportunity for connection and humanity – no matter how big or small the gesture is. Helping others distracts us temporarily from our own day-to-day activity or troubles, while giving us a different perspective and allowing us to focus on others.
- Volunteer with a non-profit organization. Share your skills and talent. Our very own Howard County HR Society chapter always welcomes volunteers to engage our members, share ideas and create our various program offerings and community initiatives. We work as a team to serve the needs of our members and community.

Education Equity Amid COVID-19 and Virtual Learning
The subject of equity and diversity in education is no stranger to educators, policymakers, and parents; however, the COVID-19 world has unveiled itself in images that make all us think, what can be done. Many school districts all around the country are turning to 100% virtual learning amid the pandemic. While some school districts can provide laptops and other technical resources to its students, the WIFI technology needed to fully access virtual learning is absent in many homes where parents and other caretakers who cannot afford WIFI technology. Parents and students are turning to public platforms that offer free access within proximity.
Equity education in the COVID world should make us all think of ways we can do better. This September, take a closer look at your corporate diversity and inclusion initiatives within your community and see where you can contribute to improving education equity.
